The Eroglu Lab in the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at Karolinska Institutet is hiring a PhD student in heart regeneration. The lab combines molecular biology with advanced imaging to understand how salamanders regenerate heart tissue.

The role

  • Reveal the role of salamander-specific genes in heart regeneration. Salamanders regenerate more than any other vertebrate and have very large genomes with many loci that lack mammalian orthologues.
  • Study a subset of these genes with in vitro and in vivo models, loss and gain of function and live imaging.
  • The group also uses human iPSC-derived cardiac cells to carry findings into clinically relevant models.

Requirements

  • A master’s degree in biomedical sciences or similar, meeting KI’s general eligibility rules (a master’s degree, or 240 credits including 60 at master’s level, or equivalent knowledge) by the deadline.
  • English proficiency equivalent to English B / English 6 in Swedish upper secondary school.
  • Motivation, teamwork, independent thinking and a systematic way of working.
  • Meriting: experience with aquatic animals and small-animal surgery, intravital and confocal imaging, advanced image analysis (deconvolution, motion correction, cell tracking), cardiovascular research in an international setting.
  • Send a personal letter, CV, degree projects and publications if any, and documents certifying eligibility. KI checks the authenticity of documents.

About the employer

Karolinska Institutet is one of the world’s leading medical universities and offers the largest range of medical education in Sweden.

Salary and deadline

  • A full-time doctoral studentship in Stockholm, maximum 4 years, starting by agreement. Pay follows KI’s salary scale for doctoral students; the ad gives no amount.
  • Deadline: 12 November 2026, reference STÖD 2-4355/2026. Apply through Varbi; KI prefers English applications.
