The School of Electrical Engineering at Aalto University is hiring an assistant professor in power electronics in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation. The post is full time and fixed term at the assistant professor level of Aalto’s tenure track system, with a supported path to a permanent professorship.

The role

  • Advance the design of power electronic converters: main-circuit topologies, passive components, gate drivers, prototyping and experimental validation.
  • Application areas include electric drives, charging, energy storage, electricity-to-heat conversion, data centres and sustainable transport; wide-bandgap semiconductors (SiC, GaN) and AI-assisted design are key opportunities.
  • Establish an independent research direction and your own group, win external funding and supervise doctoral researchers and master’s students.
  • Teach at bachelor’s and master’s level, typically two courses a year on converter topologies and related topics.

Requirements

  • A doctoral degree in electrical engineering, power electronics or a closely related field.
  • High-quality publications in leading journals and conferences, assessed against career stage.
  • A clear and original research vision with the potential to attract external funding.
  • Teaching and supervision experience or potential, and the ability to collaborate with academia and industry.
  • Excellent English. Apply in English as PDFs: cover letter, CV, publication list highlighting five key papers, a research statement (max 5 pages) and a teaching statement (2 pages).

About the employer

The department covers electrical power systems and energy conversion, control and automation, robotics, and electronic and digital systems, and Finland has a strong industrial power electronics ecosystem in drives and charging. The post is on the Otaniemi campus in Espoo, in the Helsinki area.

Salary and deadline

  • A starting package and grant-writing support; a competitive salary under the Aalto salary system. The ad gives no amount.
  • Deadline: 29 November 2026, through Aalto’s recruitment system (Apply now). External expert reviewers support the evaluation, and the best candidates are invited to interviews and teaching demonstrations.
