To be granted a permanent residence permit in Denmark, you must be over 18 years old and have resided legally and continuously in Denmark for at least 8 years. This period can be shortened to 4 years if all additional requirements are met (see below).
Summary of key conditions to be met: no prison sentence exceeding 6 months; no overdue public debt (taxes, recovered benefits, child support, daycare fees) exceeding DKK 143,100.98 (2026 level); no receipt of certain types of social benefits under the law in the last 4 years; passed the Danish language exam Prøve i Dansk 2 or an equivalent/higher exam; signed a declaration of self-support; at least 3.5 years of full-time employment (minimum 30 hours/week) in the last 4 years; and currently employed for a minimum of 15 hours/week at the time of assessment.
Note: This is a complex legal/immigration topic, and figures (debt levels, salary levels, fees) are adjusted annually — always verify the latest information directly on nyidanmark.dk or consult an immigration lawyer before submitting an application.
Mandatory Basic Requirements
- Over 18 years old.
- Have resided legally and continuously in Denmark for 8 years or more (can be shortened to 4 years if all additional requirements are met).
- Still meet the conditions of your current residence permit.
- Not sentenced to prison for more than 6 months; shorter prison sentences may also temporarily disqualify you for a certain period depending on the type of offense.
- No overdue public debt (including recovered benefits, taxes, child support, daycare fees); renewal is only possible if the debt does not exceed DKK 143,100.98 (2026 level).
- Have not received certain types of benefits under the Active Social Policy Act or the Integration Act in the last 4 years.
- Passed the Danish language exam Prøve i Dansk 2 or an equivalent/higher exam.
- Signed a declaration of residence and self-support.
- Have at least 3.5 years of full-time employment (minimum 30 hours/week) in the last 4 years.
- Currently employed for a minimum of 15 hours/week at the time of application assessment.
- Have not deliberately made it difficult to verify your identity.
Additional Requirements to Shorten the Waiting Period
In addition to the basic requirements, you must meet at least 2 of the 4 additional requirements below. If all 4 are met, the mandatory residence period is reduced from 8 years to 4 years.
- Passed the Danish language exam Prøve i Dansk 3 or higher.
- Have 4 years of full-time employment in the last 4.5 years.
- Meet the active citizenship requirement: participated for at least 1 year as a board member or in an organization supporting democratic values, or passed the active citizen exam.
- Have an average taxable income of DKK 346,155.57/year or more (2026 level) in the last 2 years.
Special case: pensioners or early retirees who meet the active citizenship requirement and pass Prøve i Dansk 3 may be granted a permanent residence permit after 4 years of legal residence.
How to Calculate the 8-Year Residence Period
The start date for calculating the residence period depends on the individual case: if applying for residence from abroad, it is calculated from the date of CPR registration when you arrive in Denmark; if applying while in Denmark, it is calculated from the date of application for the residence permit (if approved); for asylum seekers, it is calculated from the date asylum is granted or the date of CPR registration.
Time spent abroad is generally NOT included in the residence period, with some exceptions: a maximum of 2 years if seconded/posted abroad by a Danish authority, a private company (with 10 or more employees), or a non-profit organization (with 10 or more employees, with a public benefit mission); a maximum of 1 year for other cases of working abroad if there is a valid reason.
Note: If your residence permit expires, is revoked, or becomes invalid and you have not applied for an extension beforehand, the accumulated residence period will be reset. Always apply for an extension BEFORE your current permit expires.
What exactly is the “active citizenship” requirement?
The “active citizenship” requirement — one of the 4 additional requirements — can be met in two ways: actively participating for at least 1 year in the management of a non-profit organization eligible for grants under the Non-formal Education Act (folkeoplysningsloven); or passing the active citizen exam, a written test held twice a year (summer and winter) at various language schools across Denmark.
- Examples of activities that count: serving as a board member or an active member of an association/club.
- Other examples: being trained and serving as a volunteer referee or coach for a sports club.
Fees and Processing Time
- Application fee: DKK 7,570 (for employment/study) or DKK 4,970 (for family reunification/asylum).
- Maximum processing time: 12 months.
